Long before there was ever a Burt’s Bees, there was just Burt and his bees, and the honey he sold from the back of his truck. Until the end of his life, he preferred to manage his hives bare-handed, connecting directly to the simple, hardworking little insects who would help build a remarkable legacy.

Life started to change for Burt when in 1984, Maine local artist Roxanne Quimby was hitching for a ride, and Burt pulled over to offer a lift. The two hit it off and it wasn’t long before Roxanne and her two boys had moved onto Burt’s land and pitched a tent next to his living quarters – an old turkey coup. Roxanne extended Burt’s honey selling business by crafting and selling candles made from excess wax from his hives. In 1991 Roxanne perfected a lip balm recipe she found in a 19th century Farmers Journal. Burt’s Bees Lip Balm was born and quickly became a best seller – as it still is today – with one tube sold every two seconds around the globe. The Lip balm that started it all has barely changed. The conditioning & anti –oxidising effects of the beeswax repairs chapped lips & keeps skin soft and smooth & a hint of peppermint oil that gives that renowned Burt’s tingle.

Following on from the success of Burt’s balms, new products emerged, from facial skincare, body, baby to a whole assortment of different lip products.
